BK Goes Pro

It is with great pleasure, timing and comedy (see video below) that we announce the signing of Coach Brian (B.K.) Kunitzer as a FULL TIME Coach on the CrossFit Scottsdale team . Brian has come a long way in 10 months of training with us. From thick, stocky and 20 lbs over weight and only training 1x a week to a lean, mean CrossFt Games Regional Qualifier with 5.5% body fat.

More importantly Brian is now doing what he is passionate about. He has decided to leave his desk job as a CPA and come on board full time as a Coach and Manager.   Feel free to talk to Brian about chasing your dreams and achieving your goals.

Congratulations B.K.!

    “FURY” the making of B.K.

Today is dedicated to the Warrior’s down in Goodyear at CrossFit Fury especially Coach Peter Egyed who placed 6th overall in the world at the 2009 Games.  This was the first competition that CrossFit Scottsdale entered in together as a school back  in August 09. I remember inviting Brian and 2x other Bryan’s to the competition thinking how am I going to tell these guys apart… Oh ya that one cant  do a Pull up… I shall call him… B.K. Muaaaaaaa. Muaaaaa. * Insert Austin Powers  tagline here.

Today’s WODs will be more like a competition. It will be in III separate parts. Part I: the most weight put up wins. You will be given a point for each pound placed overhead. Part II will be scaled 3x ways. For RX (No bands) pull ups you will be given points for the most reps (1 point= 1 pull up). -20 Pull ups will be deducted from your total # if you use a thin blue band. -40 will be deducted if you use a Green band. -60 will be deducted if you do jumping pullups. Part III will be ranked by lowest  time in RX/weight order with 4x scales. #155/95  #135/65  #95/35. Good luck Athletes.

    I. (max load)
     5> min clock
Max load Clean and Jerk (ground to overhead) (1 rep max)
    3> min break

    II. (max reps)
    3>min clock
    Max reps Pull Ups
    5>min break

III. (lowest time gets the most points)
    For Time:
    400x Meter Run
    30x Burpees
    10x Push Press #155/95

One of you will decide that today is the day that you dont suck and become the next B.K. Who will it be?

  • CrossFit doesn’t look like your traditional gym workout

There are no ‘3 Sets of 8.’ Not a single ‘triceps kickback’ to be found. And while we have lots of novel exercises to ‘work your core’ and ‘improve your stability,’ we prefer to teach you to move better in your own skin than stand you on a blue-pimple novelty and watch you quiver.

We make big claims: that we create an elite level of fitness. That we get you places you’ve never, ever, ever been before. That their workout is our warmup. To back those claims up, we have to do movements that are efficient, challenging, and get you far more bang for your buck than a selectorized machine ever could.

A clean and jerk, for instance: once a staple of the workout crowd, and a fundamental lift for improving your grocery-carrying and storage, is banned from nearly every ‘fitness club.’ For all the wrong reasons, too: it requires coaching, chalk, and the occasional drop of a barbell from overhead. Knowledge plus cleanup plus noise? Not an option if your teenage ‘personal trainers’ have to learn it all in a two-day course.

But a clean and jerk is a big lift, requiring a lot of energy. From a purely mathematical standpoint, it’s four times as challenging as a bench press. If it seems scary, it’s only because you haven’t seen it around much – or have you? Lifting your bike onto your roof racks – that’s a clean and jerk. Storing your Christmas lights on the top shelf – that’s a clean and jerk. Doing it in the gym first just makes you break fewer bulbs. And fewer backs.

That’s right: contrary, maybe, to what you’ve been told, this stuff prevents injuries. The strongest, safest backs in the world belong to powerlifters, NOT bed-resters. Knee injuries are typically the result of misuse, imbalanced use (the knee extension machine, anyone?) or non-use. Deadlifts don’t hurt your back – given the right chance, they’ll save it. Ask around: chiropractors, physiotherapists, and doctors send patients to us. We modify our methods for the injured, yes. But they’re on the same road as our competitive CrossFitters, albeit a different starting line.

We choose to exercise in boxes. While exercisers from the 1920’s,1930’s,1940’s, and 1950’s would feel right at home, the modern machine-indoctrinated fitness pursuer will struggle to comprehend our methods. At least, at first. Slowly, they’ll recognize little glimmers of sameness. “Hey, I did that as a kid!” “We do squats at my gym…but we don’t go that low.” “I’ve seen this on TV, but I never thought I could do it….”

Our workouts are short, but tough. But you’ll want more. After a month, you’ll find yourself checking our website on a daily basis, and joke about ‘drinking the Kool-Aid.’ After three months, you’ll start breaking your own personal bests and bringing your friends. We’ve grown because CrossFit is amazing, our community is incredible and you get results…not because we have a special limited-time offer on our membership.

Now, there’s no denying that for most people, once they’ve been immersed in CrossFit, they can’t ever go back to average. It tattoos you. And once you’ve offered up your fresh, pink skin to the prick of the needle, its mark is indelible. You can’t undo CrossFit; once you’ve been painted, you can’t go back to beige.

There’s joy in sweat. There’s family in common discomfort. There’s a chemical addiction that comes from challenging yourself this way. There’s pleasure in learning new stuff every single time you’re in the gym. That’s what CrossFit is: sweat+community+knowledge. Call it what you like.

Thank you CrossFit Affiliate site and CrossFit Catalyst for a great post.

Congratulations to all 19,684 finishers in this years Pat Tillman Run. A special shout out to all of Team CFS. From Coach to Judge

This weekend’s CrossFit So. Cal sectionals at Drake Stadium on U.C.L.A campus were amazing. 200 men and 60 women competed in 4 events in perfect 70 degree weather. As Coach B.K and I set out for L.A Friday morning to take part in Judging this event and making sure the “Standards” were upheld we had a feeling this was going to be big. When we arrived that night for a judges meeting I realized the magnitude of this event. 3 T.V stations including TMZ. 150 volunteers, 80 Judges, 260 competitors and a 1000 spectators.

The athletes were made up of 19-57 year olds. Ex NFL linebackers, gymnast, track stars, newbees and firemen. Some with 5+ years in CrossFit some with less than 6 months. Some with tattoos and Mohawk’s others with glasses and comb overs all with one goal in mind. To do more in less time and get one step closer to becoming “The Worlds Fittest man and women” CrossFit Los Angeles hosted the venue and my wife Najla and her branding company Kayyem Marketing which includes Blue Media and Explosion Sportswear sponsored the event.

As an athlete and Gamer I work hard at getting better and practicing my skills. As a Coach I help others to work hard practice these skills and get better at everything. As a Judge I struggled with telling Athletes that they were not correctly following the standards we set before the competition started without Coaching them. I look at all movement through the eyes of a Teacher and when my students or in this case competitors deviate from that standard either by complete exhaustion or lack of knowledge my 1st instinct is to correct and change their movement to improve performance.

After 12 hours of judging on Saturday and having to tell someone no your rep does not count for the 5th time in a row on a chest to bar pull up when they only need one to move on. I decided that judging may not be my forte. I love to see people succeed and unfortunately when judging a CrossFit event my job was to tell people they are not doing it right without telling them how to fix it or if they would just move their hands out and feet in just a little they could efectively improve the problem. I had a great time, the comradery was awesome and it helped me understand what exactly we will need to be successful in our sectionals in San Diego next week but I will leave the judging to a judge not a Coach.

  • CrossFit’s Second Fitness Standard

The essence of this model is the view that fitness is about performing well at any and every task imaginable. Picture a hopper loaded with an infinite number of physical challenges where no selective mechanism is operative, and being asked to perform anyone randomly drawn from the hopper. This model suggests that your fitness can be measured by your capacity to perform well at these tasks in relation to other individuals. The implication here is that fitness requires an ability to perform well at all tasks, even unfamiliar tasks, tasks combined in infinitely varying combinations. In practice this encourages the athlete to disinvest in any set notions of sets, rest periods, reps, exercises, order of exercises, routines, periodization, etc. Nature frequently provides largely unforeseeable challenges; train for that by striving to keep the training stimulus broad and constantly varied.

    CrossFit’s First Fitness Standard

There are ten recognized general physical skills. They are cardiovascular/respiratory, endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, coordination, agility, balance, and accuracy. You are as fit as you are competent in each of these ten skills. A regimen develops fitness to the extent that it improves each of these ten skills.

Improvements in endurance, stamina, strength, and flexibility come about through training. Training refers to activity that improves performance through a measurable organic change in the body. By contrast improvements in coordination, agility, balance, and accuracy come about through practice. Practice refers to activity that improves performance through changes in the nervous system. Power and speed are adaptations of both training and practice.
