As I sat in the airport I was saddened by what I saw. First it is the food choices and then its the adults and especially kids that are partaking in that food while using the moving walkways and carts to get them from one gate to the next. Take a look around in any public place. Maybe you see it in your neighborhood. Maybe the only place you have to look is right a home. It seems to be an acceptance or complacency to things as normal. As if there isn’t another way. An attention to only short term rewards versus long term pay offs . Our kids are in the wrong shape…the round kind of shape. They only know what we know and do what we do. It has become an epedemic in which the First Lady Michelle Obama has set out to fight. It is something we all should fight. Our kids should thrive on being active and healthy, enjoy it and live it everyday. If you are not going to change for yourself at least change for them. Educate yourself, educate them. Know that there is another way.

CrossFit Scottsdale kids give kids and teens ages 3-17 the opportunity to enjoy exercise, learning how to fuel their bodies, and become strong, healthy, confident adults. We breed a culture of higher expectations, self empowerment and a drive to continually better yourself. It is a community of learning and changing lifestyles to affect positive change. We don’t settle and we are not complacent. This is the same for our adult students as it is our kids.

CrossFit Scottsdale changes LIVES…CrossFit Kids changes the FUTURE!

Today’s Kids WOD:

Warm Up: 10 Walking Lunges/2 push ups/Crab walk back
3 Rounds

Focus: Shoulder Press and Push Press

WOD: AMRAP in 5 min of
100 meter row
10 presses

Game: Coaches Choice

CrossFit Scottsdale had the pleasure of guest coaching the Moon Valley High School Swim Team practice yesterday. The Moon Valley Rockets have been incorportaing CrossFit into their strength and conditioning in order to better prepare them for swiming. CrossFit is by design broad and general in its areas of physical fitness in order to make you better at any sport and/or life in general. The Rockets have already noticed a difference in the water from doing CrossFit style movements for the last 4 weeks thanks to Coach Baron who took it upon herself to become a student here at CrossFit Scottsdale in order to help coach her team more effectively, oh and get some elite fitness for herself too! Coach Baron invited us out to guest coach at the begining of their summer training and we enjoyed it so much that we invited ourselves back. Here is the WOD we did:

Warm Up:
10 Lateral Burpees
10 Squats
3 Rounds

Skill: Cleans
(The clean is a great movement for power output and coordination)

The benefits of a positive attitude and confidence are countless. A “yes I can” attitude is what we teach at CrossFit Scottsdale Kids. Our kids come in without knowing their limits and constantly get challenged. Everyday they get more and more confident. CrossFit makes you better at life. For both our adults and especially our kids, approaching a challenge with a “I can do that” or “why not” attitude, giving it your best shot and ultimately not giving up will help you with any challenge you face. I can see it in every CrossFit Kids class, the determination and bravery to master a new movement and in the end they become just what they named themselves, HEROES!

We tend to take for granted the skills of coordination.

“The ability to combine several distinct movement patterns into a singular distinct movement.” ~Coach Glassman

Some of us are more coordinated than others but the good news is that coordination can be trained. The best way to train coordination is through repetition of good movement patterns. For CrossFit Scottsdale Kids this process starts early. CrossFit Scottsdale Kids picks a skill to learn and practice for each class. By repeating and practicing the functional movments of CrossFit we can gain a good foundation for more complex movements. The ability to control one’s body is increased and the nervous system is stimulated and changed to recognize the movements throughout the life of the student. For those of us who wish we were more coordinated-hang in there-it will come with practice. For our kids, don’t let them get to the point where they think they are un-coordinated. Start early with good functional movements. The first one on the list…the squat!

Check out the Moon Valley High School Swim Team who got a visit from CrossFit Scottsdale today. Boy did they get their squat and coordination down with wall balls and med ball cleans! Great job Rockets!!
